Cannes buzz didn't survive the North American release intact: critics largely admired Jolie's performance and Eastwood's restrained period craft, but split sharply over whether that restraint amounted to dignity or dullness. European critics were considerably warmer than their American counterparts, and the film's mixed standing at home has never quite caught up to its strong audience affection.
