What critics thought
DivisiveCritics largely found the film a toothless and muddled adaptation that wastes its creepy premise, with the animatronic villains generating more warmth than dread. The sharpest divide is between hardcore fans of the games — for whom the Easter eggs and lore reportedly land — and general audiences, who found a horror film that generates neither genuine scares nor genuine laughs. The PG-13 rating drew particular fire, with several critics arguing the concept demanded an R-rated treatment.
