What critics thought
Gore Verbinski's gothic horror is almost universally admired for its striking visuals and unsettling atmosphere, but critics were sharply divided on whether any of that craft is in service of anything worthwhile — the prevailing complaint being that a genuinely interesting critique of capitalism and wellness culture gets buried under a bloated runtime and a narrative that collapses in its final act. The first hour earned real praise; the back half lost most of the goodwill.
