Oliver Stone's telling of the Edward Snowden story lands in frustrating middle ground: critics broadly agreed that Joseph Gordon-Levitt's performance is the film's strongest asset, but found Stone's direction too cautious and reverential to do full justice to the material. The film works better as a procedural thriller than as a political provocation, which for a Stone picture struck many as a missed opportunity.
