Broadly watchable but cautious, the film earns its most consistent praise for Russell Crowe's work while dividing critics over whether its old-fashioned, earnest approach is a feature or a flaw. Rami Malek's performance drew particular fire, and many felt the direction leans too hard on awards-drama conventions to fully reckon with its weighty subject.
