Harmony Korine's neon-soaked provocation split critics down the middle on release — some found it a genuinely transgressive piece of social satire, others felt it was mostly hollow titillation dressed up as critique. James Franco's gonzo performance as Alien was the one point nearly everyone engaged with, even if they disagreed about whether the film around him deserved the attention.
