Critics largely dismissed this swashbuckling adaptation as a hollow spectacle — flashy airship battles and Hong Kong-style stunt work couldn't compensate for a story that felt neither fun enough to work as comedy nor gripping enough to work as adventure. The one real fault line was whether the film's cheerful disregard for Dumas was a feature or a bug: most found it pointless, while a minority welcomed it as breezy disposable entertainment.
