One of the most roundly dismissed studio releases of its year, the film was savaged for murky, near-unwatchable cinematography, incoherent editing, and a complete absence of fresh ideas — faults that overshadowed whatever creature-feature thrills it attempted. A small handful of critics were willing to accept it on its own trashy terms, but the near-universal verdict was that it failed even as disposable genre entertainment.
