Rob Zombie's remake landed poorly with most critics, who largely felt that his detailed psychological backstory for Michael Myers drained the character of menace rather than deepening it. The sharpest dividing line was the film's two-halves structure: nearly everyone agreed the childhood prequel section was the stronger half, while the back-half slasher mechanics felt generic and tension-free. A minority of critics defended Zombie's grimy, Craven-and-Hooper-influenced approach as a legitimate reinvention, but the majority found that graphic brutality had simply replaced Carpenter's slow-burn dread.
