A high school slacker who's rejected by every school he applies to opts to create his own institution of higher learning, the South Harmon Institute of Technology, on a rundown piece of property near his hometown.

Critics were largely unimpressed, finding the plot too inconsistent and silly to sustain its anti-establishment premise — though a few allowed it some charm and scattered laughs. Audiences disagreed sharply with that verdict, rating it considerably more warmly than reviewers did, suggesting the film works better as a crowd-pleasing comedy than as anything critics were inclined to take seriously.
