Critics granted the Wachowskis credit for spectacular, inventive action sequences and a genuine appetite for big ideas, but the sequel split opinion sharply on whether those ideas were profound or merely decorative — and whether all the expository dialogue, unresolved subplots, and cliffhanger ending added depth or just dead weight. The film lands somewhere between ambitious blockbuster and overloaded disappointment, depending on how much a viewer is willing to forgive the stretches between set pieces.
