Critics landed in genuinely mixed territory on this one: Dwayne Johnson's physical presence and charm won over some reviewers, but whether the film does anything worthwhile with those assets was fiercely disputed. Those who liked it saw a breezy, old-fashioned adventure elevated by its star; those who didn't argued the revisionist premise and Johnson's charisma were both squandered in favor of numbing spectacle.
