What critics thought
Critics were split almost down the middle on this adaptation, with the central dispute being whether Hollywood's animated-feature machinery smothers or enhances Dr. Seuss. Supporters found the visual design faithful and the environmentalist message worthwhile; detractors argued that the film's instinct to explain and normalize Seuss's absurdist poetry strips away the very quality that makes the source special. Audiences, however, embraced it far more warmly than critics did.
