James Gunn's MCU farewell lands well with most critics on the strength of Rocket Raccoon's emotional backstory and the franchise's signature gonzo energy, but the film's unflinching depiction of animal cruelty pushed several major outlets into outright hostility — the gap between its warmest and coldest reviews is unusually wide. Even supporters acknowledged it runs long and leans heavily on sentiment, while detractors found it brutal and joyless rather than moving.
