One of the most unanimously praised animated films in years, Inside Out won over critics with its conceptual ambition — personifying emotions as characters inside an eleven-year-old's mind — and its willingness to argue that sadness is not a problem to be solved but a feeling to be honored. The minority dissent wasn't about quality so much as ranking: a handful of critics found it slightly below Pixar's absolute peaks, and a few noted that the emotional machinery occasionally tips into manipulation.
