One of the most acclaimed films of its year by nearly any measure, Toy Story 3 won over critics not just as a crowd-pleasing animated sequel but as a genuinely melancholy meditation on growing up, letting go, and the things we carry forward. The rare dissenting voice was a minority of one, and even the film's admirers occasionally wondered whether it reached the more purely inventive heights of other late-period Pixar work.
