Widely seen as the strongest of the prequel trilogy, Revenge of the Sith earned broadly favorable notices for its darker, more dramatically ambitious storytelling — but critics and audiences split sharply on whether Lucas's weaknesses as a dialogue writer and Hayden Christensen's performance undercut what the film was reaching for. Later reappraisals have softened some of that harsher judgment, suggesting the screenplay deserves more of the blame than Christensen personally.
