What critics thought
Critics at the time were split down the middle: the animation — especially the dinosaurs and the underground world — drew genuine admiration, but most found the story thin and the returning characters tired, leaving the film feeling like a franchise going through the motions. Audiences were considerably warmer, and retrospective opinion has softened further, with Buck and his wacky energy singled out as the one element that genuinely refreshed the series.
