Date Night

Phil and Claire Foster fear that their mild-mannered relationship may be falling into a stale rut. During their weekly date night, their dinner reservation leads to their being mistaken for a couple of thieves—and now a number of unsavoury characters want Phil and Claire killed.

Date Night lands as a moderately enjoyable but underachieving comedy that coasts on the chemistry of its two leads without fully exploiting what they can do. Critics generally agreed that Carell and Fey are charming together, but that the script squanders its comedic premise by leaning too hard into generic action-movie scaffolding. The result is a film that's pleasant enough to watch yet feels like a missed opportunity given the talent involved.
