Spielberg's alien-conspiracy thriller earns broad but not universal enthusiasm: Emily Blunt's performance is the near-unanimous highlight, and the film's Spielbergian optimism and barnstorming set-pieces win most critics over, but a vocal minority find the plotting woolly and the sense of awe underwhelming compared to the director's earlier work in the genre.
