Critics and audiences landed in noticeably different places on this one: families and younger viewers embraced it warmly, while professional reviews were split down the middle. Almost everyone agreed Jim Carrey's unhinged Robotnik is the film's main draw, and the character redesign satisfied fans who feared the worst — but the script's familiarity and the film's heavily kiddified tone divided critics sharply, with some finding it breezy fun and others finding it instantly forgettable.
