After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.

Critics landed all over the map on this one: audiences embraced it warmly, but press reception was genuinely divided between those who found it a charming, source-faithful upgrade on the first film and those who called it overplotted, visually muddy, and surprisingly slow for a franchise built on speed. Jim Carrey's anarchic energy is the one point of near-universal agreement, with even harsh reviewers crediting him as the film's saving grace.
