One of the most widely panned blockbusters of its era, the film drew near-universal critical contempt for its length, incoherence, and two comic-relief characters widely condemned as racist caricatures — a controversy the filmmakers themselves admitted they couldn't defend. The minority of warmer notices clustered almost entirely around the CGI spectacle, and even those tended to be back-handed; audiences, however, were far more forgiving than critics.
