High Noon

Will Kane, the sheriff of a small town in New Mexico, learns a notorious outlaw he put in jail has been freed, and will be arriving on the noon train. Knowing the outlaw and his gang are coming to kill him, Kane is determined to stand his ground, so he attempts to gather a posse from among the local townspeople.

Now regarded as one of the great Westerns, High Noon was genuinely controversial on release: audiences expecting gunfights and scenery found instead a morality play built around a single man's crisis of conscience, and critics split over whether that was a subversive stroke of genius or a betrayal of the genre's spirit. The debate extended beyond reviewers — it provoked a direct counter-film from John Wayne and Howard Hawks, was condemned in the Soviet Union as individualist propaganda, and became a cherished political metaphor for multiple U.S. presidents.
